The 2025 New York City Marathon isn’t officially over yet, as of writing this. The last runners, those running for pride, won’t cross the finish line for a couple more hours. The elite results are in though. In general, it was a good day for Olympians on the streets of the Big Apple.

The Women’s Marathon

The Women’s Marathon was extremely fast this year. The top three female runners, Hellen Obiri, Sharon Lokedi, and Sheila Chepkirui all eclipsed the course’s female record of 2:22:31. Obiri, the clear star of this year’s race, finished in a time of 2:19:51 cut over 2 minutes off of Margaret Okayo’s 2003 record. Lokedi and Chepkirui completed the Kenyan podium sweep in times of 2:20:07 and 20:20:24. Fourth place finisher Fiona O’Keefe, the highest finishing American, came in just 18 seconds short of the previous course mark.

The victory is Obiri’s second in New York in four tries, as well as her third top two finish. She has now won New York twice, Boston twice, and the Olympic Bronze, all occurring in the last three years. For Lokedi, this is her second top two finish in New York. She won her debut in 2022.

Overall, Olympians performed well. Seven of the top ten spots in the female field went to Olympians. In addition to Obiri, Lokedi, and O’Keefe, last year’s Olympic Gold medalist Sifan Hassan finished 6th. Jessica Warner-Judd finished 7th. Emily Sisson and Fionnuala McCormack came in 8th and 10th respectively. Sara Hall, Molly Seidel, and  Vivian Cheruiyot started but didn’t finish the race.

The Men’s Marathon

On the men’s side, the Kenyan’s also swept the podium. Benson Kipruto claimed first by less than a second over Alexander Mutiso. Albert Korir crossed the finish line less than a minute later for third. British Olympian Patrick Dever finished fourth, crossing the finish a second after Korir. Kipruto’s victory adds to his already impressive marathon resume. New York joins Boston, Chicago, and Tokyo among Kipruto’s World Major Marathon victories.

In the men’s field Olympian’s claimed eight spots in the top 20 runners and nine in the top 25. Five of the nine Olympians finished in the top ten.

Americans in the Marathon

Americans were well represented in the New York’s final results. Across both fields, 16 Americans finished in a top 20 spot. In the women’s field, nine American’s finished in the top 17 spots. Annie Frisbie finished right behind O’Keefe in 5th place. Emily Sisson and Amanda Vestri finished 8th and 9th. The 11th through 15th spots went to Susanna Sullivan, Elena Hayday, Stephanie Bruce, Felicia Pasadyn, and Abigail Shoemaker.
