Sports have always been integrated into my life. There is a family legend that I “watched” my first baseball game when I was a day old. I played baseball from spring to fall and soccer from late summer to winter. I grew up listening to my dad tell stories about Carlton Fisk’s home run in Game 5 of the 1975 World Series, the 1986 World Series, and the 1980 US Men’s Hockey team. He spoke with a special reverence about the Miracle on Ice. The Olympics have always held a special place for me because I grew up hearing those stories.

The first Olympic memory I have is watching the Opening Ceremony from the Lillehammer Winter Olympics with my dad. I remember not really knowing what was going on, but I was still hooked. I have many great memories of watching the Games, many not because of the competition but because of who I was watching with and the life events they lined up with. For the Nagano Games, my cousin and I geeked out about Jonny Moseley’s moguls medal while we both battled the flu. The Salt Lake Games fell during high school and I still remember sitting with my friends watching the US Men’s Hockey team beat Russia in the semi-finals before falling to Canada in the final.

The Athen’s Games coincided with my first days on a college campus and helped break the ice with my new roommate. Curling at Turin provided the background noise while I did my schoolwork. The Beijing Olympics fell right after graduation. Those games created a moment I had never seen before or since, when a packed bar went completely silent because Michael Phelps was swimming. Back-to-back massive snowstorms gave me plenty of time at home to watch the first week of the Vancouver Games. The final day found me sitting with a new group of friends watching Sydney Crosby broke all of America’s hearts with an overtime goal in the men’s hockey Gold Medal Game.

I could go on about all my Olympic memories. Those memories are why I started this blog. My goal is to share Olympic news, discuss interesting topics, find a creative outlet for me, and ultimately create new memories. Hopefully, readers will enjoy it.
